2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments

Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S. Teachers:

.....a. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity
.....b. develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become
active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress
.....c. customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using
digital tools and resources
.....d. provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology
standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching

My Reflection on meeting this standard (So What?)

.....Project-based learning activities seem to be best suited for integration of this technology standard. PBL activities need to be as varied as possible to allow the greatest flexibility in meeting the needs of our diverse learning groups. In my own curriculum my needs would be mostly literature-based. Graphic organizers, blogs, Google documents, social bookmarking, and any other site using collaboration provide the needed components for organizing thoughts and gathering ideas. Using PBL sites like ePals would afford our curriculum with the most varied options for differentiating the projects. The base of this standard deals with promoting individual growth for our students using technology as a means to diversify.

My Future Learning Goals related to this standard (Now What?)

.....Project-based activities will best meet the needs of this standard. Open-ended activities provide the most freedom with individuality for the students. Once they become used to using the tools we can begin teaching them how to evaluate their own work and that of their peers. Project-based learning experiences tend to offer the richest opportunities for meeting the needs of diverse learning styles, levels, and needs. I have begun to change my upper grade evaluations to include more technology-based activities. Because the idea is still new to our district, this process was off to a slow start, but I already have my 4th and 5th graders doing final projects which are more clearly defined project-based activities focused on using technology to create digital stories. When I have more reliable and consistent access to the computer lab, I will move 6th grade in the same direction, preparing them for more varied online collaboration, as the district allows.
